Welcome to Reception Class

We wish both the children and parents a warm welcome to Reception class at Farington Moss St Paul’s. We have a fun filled year planned, providing the children with exciting experiences that they will hopefully remember for a long time. We look forward to watching the children grow and flourish as the year progresses. 

Teachers in Reception

Mrs Charlesworth teaches Reception throughout the week and Miss Muldowney will teach the class on a Tuesday morning and a Friday afternoon. The children will be supported throughout the week by our lovely teaching assistants Miss Muldowney and Miss Lay.

Reading in Reception

In Reception we follow Read, Write Inc which a DFE accredited systematic synthetic phonics programme. The children will start learning between four and five sounds each week as well as learn how to decode and blend words. Once we feel that the children are ready, we will send them home with reading books and a reading diary. We ask that you encourage your child to read with you for 5-10 minutes every day and even when your child completes their book, they should re-read it to help develop their reading confidence, fluency and comprehension. Whenever your child reads, please ensure that their diary is dated and signed with any relevant comments. They will need to keep their reading diary and book in their book bags to bring to school every day. The children will also have lots of opportunities to read and enjoy books throughout the week at school in class and in the library.

Star of the week

Each week one child will earn the award of ‘Star of the Week’ and two children will be invited to show ‘Good Work’ on a Friday at 2:30pm. If your child is chosen, you will receive a notification on Class Dojo. 

General Reminders

• Welly Wednesday - Our outdoor learning will take part on a Wednesday afternoon.

• This term the children will have P.E. on a Monday afternoon.

• Any letters or reply slips can be put in your child’s book bag or handed into the school office. 

• Please ensure all uniform and personal belongings are labelled. 

Homework 

Homework will be handed out at the beginning of each half term.

The curriculum in Foundation stage is different to the rest of the school.  Learning is split into 7 areas:

Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED)- Helping children to develop a positive sense of themselves and others in forming positive relationships and respect for others - To build on their social skills and manage their own feelings.

Communication and  Language  (CL)- giving children opportunities to experience a rich language environment through speaking and listening.

Physical Development (PD)- providing opportunities for children to be active and interactive and to develop their coordination, control and movement.

Literacy (L)-linking letters and sounds and developing reading and writing.

Mathematics (M)-giving children the opportunities to develop their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating, problem solving, shape and measure.

Understanding of the world (UTW)-guiding children to make sense of their world and community.

Expressive Arts and Design (EAD)- enabling children to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials through a variety of activities from dance and art to role play and technology.
